October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of safeguarding online activity from harmful cyber attacks. Each Friday this month, we'll share tips to help our students, staff, and families secure their sensitive data and stay safe online. Tip #4: Never leave your devices unattended, even for a short time. Always secure your laptop, tablet, phone, or flash drive so no one else can use it while you're away. And while you're at it, tidy up your desk to ensure no passwords, account details, or important files are sitting out openly exposed. You'll leave with peace of mind AND a clean workspace! We hope you've found these tips helpful. To learn more about Cybersecurity Awareness Month, visit www.cisa.gov/cybersecurity-awareness-month.

We are celebrating our school leaders this month! Principals are among the hardest working, yet often least recognized individuals in education. Principals set the academic tone for their schools, and it is their vision, dedication, and determination that provide the mobilizing force for achieving student success. We are so grateful for our principals who step up every day for our students and staff.

#TGIF! Third graders at Shepherdstown Elementary School combined art and geography this week to create a fun lesson in map skills using pumpkins as a globe. They began by painting their pumpkins blue, drawing the equator, and tracing and labeling each continent in its proper position. Finally, they painted their creations green and blue to resemble the earth. The lesson helped them apply their knowledge of 2D map skills to a 3D globe with a fun autumnal twist!

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of safeguarding online activity from harmful cyber attacks. Each Friday this month, we'll share tips to help our students, staff, and families secure their sensitive data and stay safe online. Tip #2: Don't click suspicious links. Sometimes you may get what seems like an email from a friend. But is your friend really the one sending the message? Always review the sender's email before replying to a message or clicking a link. Malicious files can extract personal data, monitor and transmit your activities, and even take over your device. Avoid suspicious or unnecessary downloads and scan documents with anti-virus software before opening. If you're still uncertain about a link, visit www.virustotal.com to check its safety. Each Friday this month, we'll share tips to help our students, staff, and families secure their sensitive data and stay safe online. Tip #1: Protect your passwords! Be sure to secure passwords for your accounts and NEVER share them with others. Many platforms now allow you to enable two-factor authentication for added security to keep unauthorized users from accessing an account. Enable this security feature whenever possible. After many years of rising scores on the WVGSA test, JCS saw a steep decline during the pandemic, from which we have not recovered. The latest scores show staggering deficits in ELA and math that keep hundreds of children below the mark for proficiency. To ensure that our students are ready for academics and life beyond the classroom, we are adjusting our elementary education program for 3-5 grade students. Please visit www.jcswv.org/expansion to learn more. There will be a district-wide TWO-HOUR EARLY DISMISSAL for all students on Friday, Oct. 7, 2022, to support teachers as they prepare to make these adjustments. Thank you for your trust and support.

We would like to thank Jefferson Security Bank (JSB) for their generous donation that helped fund Reflex Math for this school year! Reflex Math is a game-based program, that helps students become fluent in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Building fact fluency in the lower grade levels helps students be more successful as they progress toward complex math topics in the intermediate levels.

Shoutout to Shepherdstown Shares for their generous donation to the SES and SMS communities! The local nonprofit organization collected donations from the Shepherdstown community to benefit teachers at the start of this new school year. Community members gave generously and even shared stories about how former teachers had positively impacted their lives. SMS Faculty Senate president Janica Spies accepted the donations, saying, "We are so very grateful to be a part of such a giving, caring community!" Thank you to Shepherdstown Shares and the Shepherdstown community for helping to kick off this school year with a smile!
